An organization that does not change is left behind over time. An organization that only changes by chance, too. And an organisation that changes just to make things different as well. Change management takes chance out of the change processes, defining goals and steps in the way. Achieving goals thus becomes a project goal, not a stroke of luck for transformation.
Often looking at companies changing we see failure. Sometimes because planned strategies and process goals did not apply. Mostly, however, because the implementation is approached incorrectly. In particular, the most important component of a change project is often overlooked: the people who put their heart and soul into the project. Those that are affected by it. Those who have to do extra work for others to reap the benefits. And all those that want to be heard in order to be able to support the change as their change too.
Management, Managers and employees pull together when they all understand the need and see the benefits. As important as strategy development is, in order for the strategy to work, it must also include a concept for change management. The benefit of the change project must be understood in all groups involved. Change management is people business. It is where the rubber meets the road.
In 30+ years of leadership responsibility I have seen numerous change projects, each with new ups and downs. I have seen those that failed and those that became a success. Minor omissions can lead to severe project back-log. Apparently unnecessary steps may be vital for straight progress. One of the most frequent omissions is to not take change-management seriously.
