How stringent is the long-term orientation of your company?

Leading a company with clarity requires a vision. A vision that generates intrinsic motivation within the company management and the employees. The vision offers long-term orientation. It sets priorities. Every decision can be measured against it: Does it fit the vision, yes or no?

Visions need sustainability

In order for a vision to remain long-term fixed point of focus it needs to be in writing. Precisely worded, with maximum clarity. Lively and captivating. Thus, the vision which started out as an exercise of strategic thinking becomes an entrepreneurial reality that will lead you far into the future.

Strategy is just a tool

Strategy has a task to fulfill. How well it works is determined in advance by completing proper homework. According to the management model F. Malik / St. Gallen, strategy development includes these steps:

  1. Determination of one’s own position
  2. Determination of the competitive situation
  3. How will the markets develop? (customers, suppliers, labor)
  4. So how should the company be developed?

But with what eyes do you see to answer these questions? Usually it is the internal view. The external view has some advantages, because it also sees what no one wants to see. I advocate using internal and external perspectives in a balanced relationship.

A 360-degree view sees more

Two points of view, six simple dimensions: Strategy development is already getting closer to life. With the external view, we consider:

  • Quality: What (product, process, etc.) do we offer to prospects and  customers?
  • Service: What do we give on top of it to bind and set ourselves apart?
  • Price: Where are the pain points?

With the internal view, we consider:

  • Resources: How much time, capital, know-how do we invest?
  • Earnings: What do we want, what do we need? (Finance, reputation, market shares)
  • Development: Where do we want to be and when? (know-how, innovation, speed and market position)

KPIs are defined and maintained for each dimension. Thus you can pause from time to time and check whether you are still on track.
